Walmart Neighborhood Market is a chain of grocery stores launched by Walmart in 1998.[3] These stores are designed to be the opposite of vastly larger superstores. These smaller stores are meant to "woo shoppers with easier parking, less crowded aisles and quicker checkout." Walmart Neighborhood Market stores offer a variety of products including a full line of groceries.

Introduced in 1998 as 'Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, they range around 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2), which is a quarter of the size of a typical Walmart Supercenter in the United States. However, in many countries, stores of this scale would be classified as superstores or "compact hypermarkets." Walmart Neighborhood Markets employ 80–100 employees and offer about 28,000 items.

United States[edit]

As of 2008, the Walmart Neighborhood Market chain has expanded into many smaller Southern markets in the United States. Some of these stores are located relatively close to existing Walmart Supercenter stores; such examples include Newport News, Virginia; Center Point, Alabama; Mandeville, Louisiana; Cape Coral, Florida; Homewood, Alabama; Sherwood, Arkansas; Gulf Breeze, Florida; Fayetteville, Arkansas; Southaven/Horn Lake, Mississippi; Kenner, Louisiana; Plano, Texas and Norfolk, Virginia.

Aggressive expansion of this division is planned in the next five years.[citation needed]

Supermercado[edit]

Walmart opened "Supermercado de Walmart" locations to appeal to Hispanic communities in the United States. These stores are similar to Walmart Neighborhood Markets. The first one, a 39,000 square feet (3,600 m2) store in the Spring Branch area of Houston, opened on Wednesday April 29, 2009. The store was a conversion of an existing Walmart Market.

Puerto Rico[edit]

In July 2003, Walmart acquired Amigo Supermarkets in Puerto Rico. They are very similar to Walmart Neighborhood Markets, but the name is Amigo.

Canada[edit]

In 2005, the concept rolled into Canada. Walmart opened three stores in 2006 (one in London, Ontario, and two in the Greater Toronto area), but the number could increase in the future. In Canada, Walmart Markets are connected to regular Walmarts to form Walmart Supercentres. There are now over 30 Supercentres in Canada with plans for over 100.

Argentina[edit]

In 1997, Walmart entered Argentina with one Supercenter in Avellaneda (Greater Buenos Aires). After slow growth during the following decade, a new store format was developed inspired by the WalMart Neighborhood Market stores. The new stores were branded Chango Mas. Expansion followed rapidly and other smaller formats spun off this concept. As of October 2014, the store count for Chango Mas and sister stores is as follows:

  • Changomas 48
  • Changomas Express 10
  • Mi Changomas 9

There are currently 28 Supercenters in Argentina.
