Van Wert County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 28,744, which is a decrease of 3.1% from 29,659 in 2000.[2] It is included within the Van Wert Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included within the Lima-Van Wert-Wapakoneta Combined Statistical Area. Its county seat is Van Wert[3] and is named for Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of John André in the American Revolutionary War.[4]

According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 410.42 square miles (1,063.0 km2), of which 409.16 square miles (1,059.7 km2) (or 99.69%) is land and 1.27 square miles (3.3 km2) (or 0.31%) is water.[5]

As of the census[7] of 2000, there were 29,659 people, 11,587 households, and 8,354 families residing in the county. The population density was 72 people per square mile (28/km²). There were 12,363 housing units at an average density of 30 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.43% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.75% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 11,587 households out of which 32.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% were married couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% were non-families. 24.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $39,497, and the median income for a family was $46,503. Males had a median income of $32,377 versus $23,859 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,293. About 4.20% of families and 5.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.80% of those under age 18 and 4.00% of those age 65 or over.
