Vaidiki Brahmins (Vaidika, Vaidikulu, Vaideeki) are a sect of Telugu-speaking Smartha Brahmins. They are predominantly followers of Adi Shankaracharya and are mostly found in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The name derives from Vedas.


Sub-sects[edit]

Vaidiki Brahmins are further classified into sub-sects, depending on the region their ancestors hail from. 'Nadu' in Telugu means area / Region.

The various sub-sects among Vaidiki Brahmins are:

Mulakanatlu Brahmin Surnames[edit]

Telugu language is the mother-tongue of all members of this community, but the community tends to define itself in terms of being expatriate from Andhra Pradesh. Apart from relatively large population of this community in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, the Mulakanatlu (DASARI) sub-sect is also domiciled in huge numbers in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Telaganya Brahmana Surnames[edit]

This sect of brahmanas originally migrated from the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh to many other parts of the state. Their migrations were attributed to the Islamic invaders who occupied their homeland in Telangana region. They were forced to either convert to Islam or leave their hom land. Thus they decided to migrate. Some of them migrated even to Chattisgarh. Some went back to their home land when the rulers changed. Their livelihood has been priestly activities for the welfare of the city called paurohityam. Due to modernization most of them have spread across many parts of the country and many of them gave up the ancient tradition of paurohityam. Members of Telaganya Association often get-together once in a year in Visakhaptnam. Telaganya brahmanas have surnames mentioned in the table below.
