Sony Entertainment Television or SET, is a Hindi-language based general entertainment television channel in India. It was launched in October 1995 and is owned by Multi Screen Media Pvt. Ltd. (MSM, formerly SET India Private Limited),[2] a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Sony has gained a lot of popularity from shows like Bade Acche Lagte Hain, C.I.D. and Kaun Banega Crorepati.

MSM's family of channels in India include: SAB TV, SET Max, Sony Aath, SET PIX, AXN, Animax and recently on September 1, 2011, they launched a 24 hour Hindi Music Channel Sony MIX,[3] distributed by MSM Discovery Private Limited, a distribution joint venture between MSM and Discovery Communications India.[4] The international feed of SET, branded Sony Entertainment Television Asia, is visible to viewers outside of India.[citation needed]

As of September 1, 2011, the channel has changed its identity by changing its theme and Sony word being inscribed on top of logos of all its sister channels - SAB, SET, PIX, MIX, SIX and MAX.

Marketing [edit]

Competition [edit]

Today, SET faces stiff competition from other players in the market, especially STAR Plus, Zee TV, and Colors.[5] In terms of average prime time TVR; Sony Entertainment Television had 3 shows among top ten non-fiction programs in 2011 while Zee TV and STAR Plus had two shows.[6] But mostly SET is considered as a tough competitor of STAR Plus.[original research?] Currently,[when?] Sony is the 2nd most watched general entertainment channel followed by Colors and Zee TV.[citation needed]

Sony HD [edit]

Sony is available in HD on DishTV, Tata Sky, Videocon d2h, Airtel digital TV and Hathway.[7] It is a commercial-free channel and was launched on May 28, 2012.[citation needed]

Branding [edit]

Sony Entertainment Television changed its logo three times, but they changed its graphics frequently. From June 16, 2007, all the Sony channels had the same type of graphics but a different colour and different before-serial graphics. But now,[when?] it has been declared that SAB TV will have the 2007 graphic.[citation needed] Only SET, Sony Aath, SET PIX and SET Max graphics would change.[citation needed]

Programming [edit]

SET's programming is targeted towards family audiences. The programming covers genres including drama, reality, comedy, thriller, horror, Bollywood, and live events. Some of its most successful programmes to date include Boogie Woogie; C.I.D.; Comedy Circus; Indian Idol; an adaptation of the worldwide Pop Idol (American Idol); Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (There Is No One Like Jassi), an adaptation of the Colombian telenovela Betty la fea (Ugly Betty), Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa; 10 Ka Dum, the Indian adoption of popular game show Power of 10; and Aahat (a Horror Show).

In July 2010, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that it has bought the copyrights of Kaun Banega Crorepati (Indian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire) from STAR Plus and aired KBC 4 with its original host Amitabh Bachchan on the Indian SET. KBC 1 & 2 were hosted by Amitabh Bachchan and KBC 3 was hosted by Shahrukh Khan on STAR Plus. Kaun Banega Crorepati(KBC) Season 5 started on Sony Entertainment Television on the independence day, 15 August 2011 with its brand new 1st Episode which saw a blockbuster opening of 5.24 TVRs, in the top 3 metros Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata.
