Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) was a digital media delivery service operated by Sony Corporation. SEN provided access to services, including PlayStation Network for games, Video Unlimited for film and TV, Music Unlimited for music, and PlayMemories for sharing videos.[1] In 2015, the Sony Entertainment Network was superseded by the PlayStation Network, which became Sony's leading entertainment service brand.

Sony Entertainment Network was first introduced on 31 August 2011 by the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. The new platform for Sony users was announced at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin. Sony Network Entertainment was the original name for the network until 2011 where Sony decided to create the Sony Entertainment Network platform as a way for the community to access digital entertainment. With the new name, also came new logos for the different services on the Sony Entertainment Network. Qriocity services was used by Sony as the video and music downloading platform, it was renamed in 2011 to Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited. This allowed Sony to expand the Music Unlimited service into Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, The Netherlands and Belgium by the end of the 2011 year.[2]

During 2012 the Sony Entertainment Network was released to the community and was available on Sony’s different devices. Instead of using a web serviced browser in their Brava Televisions, it was decided by Sony to integrate the Music and Video Unlimited into the TVs home menu. The interface was purposely created for the Sony Entertainment Network and make is more accessible for users to access the services that Sony Entertainment Network offered.[3]

In 2015 the Sony Entertainment Network, along with its Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services, were fully absorbed into the PlayStation Network, succeeding SEN as Sony's leading entertainment service brand. Following this, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited were re-branded as PlayStation Music and PlayStation Video respectively.[4]

Video Unlimited[edit]

Video Unlimited allowed users to purchase or rent videos. Purchases and rentals could be made online through the Sony Entertainment Network store, through the PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles and PlayStation Vita, through the Video Unlimited store on many Sony Blu-ray disc players and Bravia TVs or via an Xperia smartphone and tablet app.[5] The services provided customers with an easy and accessible way to watch and discover new movies and TV. Through the wide range of options that Video Unlimited has a user could choose from new movies, classic movies or to keep up with a TV series. The use of logging in enabled the customer to easily choose and watch videos from anywhere, on devices that are compatible with Video Unlimited.[6] Video Unlimited was later renamed to PlayStation Video.

Music Unlimited[edit]

Music Unlimited is a cloud-based music service available in 19 countries.[7] According to Sony, the music catalog contains 25 million songs.[8] There are two subscription levels: Access, which allows for listening to all available music on Mac, PC, PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3; and Premium, which adds availability for mobile devices and Walkman players as well as Blu-ray players and BRAVIA TVs. In accordance to Sony, there are now over 30 million songs available for mobile devices and users on the PlayStation. Like any normal music service, Music Unlimited allows you to create playlists, find new songs and songs that are recommended to you through your own taste of music. A special feature that makes the Music unlimited stand out is the ability to listen to music on your PlayStation 4 whilst playing a game, Sony believe that this makes the overall experience a better one whilst playing. A user with a PS Vita has the ability to always use music unlimited where ever they are whilst playing games at the same time. Sony Entertainment Network offer a free 30 day trial to new customers lets customers test whether or not they want to continue and purchase a subscription. The service offers two subscription plans, Premium Plan which currently is $12,99/month and Access Plan which is currently $7,99/month. Both plans have different levels of access to features that Music Unlimited offers. Premium Plan allows access to every feature which includes access of the service on every available device. Whereas the access plan only gives availability to PS4, PS3 and online through PC or Mac.[9] Although the service provides high quality music through an internet connection, offline playback has been reported to be of not as good quality.[10]

PlayStation Store[edit]

The PlayStation store, available in 51 countries worldwide,[11][better source needed] is a service created by Sony for PlayStation users. Users can purchase games and content through their PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Tablet and Smartphones. Pre-Ordering is available on the PlayStation store, where users can Pre-purchase a game.[12] The PlayStation store is a popular way to purchase Downloadable Content (DLC) and game add-ons for your current and already purchased games. On the PlayStation store, players can purchase games from previous generation PlayStation consoles. Cross-Buy allows a user to purchase a game on their current console and have the ability to use it on PS3, PS4 and PS Vita.[13]

Sony Entertainment Network is available on most Sony platforms, these include PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Mobile devices, Sony Tablet S, Sony Tablet P, BRAVIA HDTV, Sony Internet TV, Xperia, Walkman, Microsoft Windows, iOS and Mac OS X. The BRAVIA HDTV uses the Sony Entertainment Network as one of its main entertainments systems, users have full access to the services that Sony Entertainment Network brings. Through the control, there is a Sony Entertainment Network button where users can simply press the button to access the menu.[14]

Sony Entertainment Network Store[edit]

The interface through the Sony Entertainment Network Store is grouped into sections where users are able to see Top Rated Games, Latest Released Movies and DLC, Coming Soon, Deals and Offers and PlayStation Plus. The top of the interface displays the games, movies and TV. The store is the main home to where users can search for different movies, games and other media.[15]

The games section keeps track of all of the games that are stored in the Sony entertainment network store. Games are used for users who wish to buy games for the PlayStation consoles, the main location for purchasing games on the Sony Entertainment Network.[16]

The Sony Entertainment Network website offers a lot of support to current customers with a subscription. According to Sony, they are dedicated to help you with issues relating to the Sony Entertainment Network services.[17] Common methods are used such as FAQ’s,[18] and support lines such as being able to phone customer support, different countries have different phone numbers that can be called. This is usually done to enquire about specific Sony Entertainment Network issues. There are 16 countries that the support line supports and can be called at only specific time.[19] Maintenance is done regularly to ensure that the Sony Entertainment Network is kept up to date and is always working efficiently, the network will go offline to assure the maintenance is done correctly.[20]

Sony Entertainment Network Blog[edit]

Sony Entertainment Network has a blog in which users are able to read and view content about the network. A user can read things such as what new movies are coming out soon to the service, with also reviews to different TV series or movies that are available on the Sony Entertainment Network service Video Unlimited. Users with an account to the blog are able to post comments to a particular movie and give their views and comments about the movie. Users are also able to access archives of news from previous years and months.[21]
