World Universities Debating Championship[edit]

Main article: Chennai Worlds 2014

Rajalakshmi Engineering College hosted the 2014 World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC)[43] which was held in India for the first time in the city of Chennai. The WUDC is the world's largest debating tournament, and one of the largest annual international student events in the world.[citation needed] Like all WUDC tournaments, Chennai Worlds 2014 was held in the British Parliamentary Debate format. Each year, the event is hosted by a university selected by the World Universities Debating Council. The tournament is colloquially referred to as "Worlds" and the winners of the open competition are acknowledged as the "World Champions". Rajalakshmi Engineering College successfully bid to hold Worlds in March 2012, defeating Chulalongkorn University in a delayed vote that was held after no universities bid in time for the 2012 tournament held in Manila.[44]

The tournament, held from 27 December 2013 to 3 January 2014, was reportedly marked by controversy, including failure of the university administration to meet promised budgetary obligations to pay independent adjudicators in non-controlled currencies (resulting in adjudicators threatening to strike and prevent commencement of the 7th round of the tournament), removal and interrogation of Pakistani debaters who had obtained visa entry into the country, replacing the traditional Women's Night (designed to highlight the talent of female debaters) with a motorcycle exhibition,[45] relocation of the tournament hotel to multiple new venues (different from and lesser to the promised standard of the originally offered accommodations at the ITC Grand Chola) without sufficient room to house all the participants, and efforts by those hotels to lock participants out of their rooms and the withholding of passports to settle incidental room charges or pay funds promised by Rajalakshmi Engineering College.[46][47]

The Finals were held in Taj Coromandel, Chennai on January 3, 2014. Josh Zoffer and Ben Sprung-Keyser of Harvard University won the final round, making them the 34th Debating World Champions.[48] The English as a Second Language title was won by the Berlin Debating Union and the English as a Foreign Language title was won by the Institut Teknologi Bandung.[49]

Interaction & Partnership with Aircel Chennai Open[edit]

Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Rajalakshmi Institutions) has also been the official partner of the Aircel Chennai Open from 2012 Aircel Chennai Open[50][51] and 2013 Aircel Chennai Open.[52] The Chennai Open (also known during its run as the Gold Flake Open and the Tata Open) is a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It is currently part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour. It is held annually in January at the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Conferences, Symposiums & Workshops[edit]

Rajalakshmi Engineering College in association with the International Union of Surface Finishers and the Singapore Surface Engineering Association is organising an International conference on Surface Engineering for Research and Industrial Applications called Interfinish SERIA 2013 Asia Pacific from 7 August to 9,2013.[53] The event inaugurated by Padma Bushan Dr V K Saraswat, Former Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and DG DRDO and SA to RM.[54][55][56] The conference has over 9 plenary speakers, 70 keynote speakers and invited speakers along with over 100 paper presentations from researchers from both academics and industry. Participants from countries such as USA, UK, Russia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain and Malta have confirmed their registrations. Parallel Workshops on Heat Treatment, corrosion protection, plasma coatings, cyanide free plating and nanotechnology by experts from UK, Korea, Singapore and India is planned for academicians, students and practising engineers.[57][58] Addressing the launch of the event, Vijay Kumar Saraswat, former Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, Director-General DRDO and Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister,[59] said surface engineering techniques find application in areas ranging from automotive, aerospace, missile, power, electronic to biomedical.[60]

TIFAC-CORE[86][edit]

Mission REACH (Relevance & Excellence in ACHieving new heights in educational institutions) programme has been launched in the year 2000, as a Technology Vision 2020 for India initiative, by Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC), an autonomous organisation of the Department of Science & Technology.Under the Mission, TIFAC establishes COREs (Centres of Relevance & Excellence) in Educational Institutions in diverse fields of emerging Science and Technology. These COREs form a tripartite relationship between the Government, Industry and Educational Institutions to provide technically qualified manpower of international standards. Rajalaskhmi Engineering College (REC), Chennai has been selected for the establishment of CORE in the area of "MACHINE VISION". The CORE has been launched and is active since 14 February 2009.

The CORE will focus on the study of machine vision methods and techniques whereby artificial vision systems can be constructed and gainfully employed in practical applications. Machine Vision is the application of computer vision to industry and manufacturing, and is an engineering field which incorporates several disciplines such as computer science, optics, mechanical engineering, and industrial automation.

A common application of machine vision is the inspection of manufacturing goods for quality control as this requires high-speed, high magnification, 24/7 operation with repeatability of measurements. Machine vision systems can also use digital input/output devices and computer networks to control other manufacturing equipment such as robotic arms.

National MEMS Design Centre[90][edit]

National MEMS Design Centre (NMDC) at REC

A National MEMS Design Centre (NMDC) at our institute has been established under National Program on Micro and Smart Systems (NPMASS) for the benefit of users from the region. REC motivates the research activity in the field of MEMS by proper utilisation of the facilities provided by NPMASS from design to fabrication of prototype MEMS products and specific field applications. REC will also facilitate external researchers from other interested institutes (academic or National Labs subject to individual software licensing conditions) to use the design tools.

NPMASS

The National Program on Micro and Smart Systems (NPMASS), has been launched after the success of National Program on Smart Materials (NPSM), which is a unique program, working towards the basic aim of creating awareness in India about MEMS and Smart Systems. The NPMASS under Government of India is wholly supported by Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) through Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), and is endorsed by the five departments DRDO, DOS, DST, CSIR and DIT.

Transport[edit]

Since the campus is located 35 kilometres (21.7 mi) away from Chennai city, Tamil Nadu, transportation is provided between Chennai city and the college. The college now runs over 64 buses.[91] Buses are operated on Saturdays and Sundays for special classes, Sports etc. On special occasions buses are sent for industrial visits and social service activities. The College owns four of the buses, one ambulance and a van. A transport committee headed by a convener takes care of the smooth operation of buses. A staff member in charge of the bus (one teaching and one supporting) also ensure the smooth functioning of the buses. The campus is located close to the Hyundai manufacturing plant and SIPCOT. The Rajalakshmi Engineering College bus timings and bus stops for various areas in and around the Chennai city can be known through their periodically updating transport department Website http://www.rectransport.com/.

Medical Center[edit]

The campus houses a medical center near the hostel blocks, with a nurse and doctor available round the clock to attend to emergencies. There is an emergency Ambulance van available round the clock.

Alumni association[edit]

The alumni associations is very active in promoting interactions and camaraderie among the alumni, staff and the management.Besides helping the alumni in all possible ways, it also lends its support to the college to achieve its cherished goals, its vision and mission.REC Alumni Association has their own website http://alumni.rajalakshmi.org[92] to do online registration for getting regular e-mail news letters about the various campus & alumni activities. The College has many alumni chapters at various countries like United Kingdom, United States and Saudi Arabia for their lifetime connections with their international alumni students.[93]
