Bill Belichick has won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, more than any other active coach.

There are 32 head coaching positions in the National Football League (NFL). Following the 2012 NFL regular season, 8 head coaches were fired. These include Andy Reid from the Philadelphia Eagles,[1] Pat Shurmur from the Cleveland Browns,[2] Norv Turner from the San Diego Chargers,[3] Romeo Crennel from the Kansas City Chiefs,[4] Lovie Smith from the Chicago Bears,[5] Ken Whisenhunt form the Arizona Cardinals,[6] Chan Gailey from the Buffalo Bills,[7] and Mike Mularkey from the Jacksonville Jaguars.[8] The Chiefs later hired Reid to replace Crennel,[9] making him the only one of the eight to be rehired as a head coach.

The longest tenured head coach on his current team is Bill Belichick, who has been with the New England Patriots since the 2000 NFL season. Belichick also has the most wins among active coaches, as well as most Super Bowl appearances (5) and Super Bowl wins (3) as head coach.[10] Others to have won a Super Bowl as head coach with their current team include Mike Tomlin, Tom Coughlin, John Harbaugh and Mike McCarthy. Additionally Sean Payton, who is suspended for the 2012 season and is expected to return to the New Orleans Saints, has won a Super Bowl, and Mike Shanahan has won two with a team other than his current.

  1. ^ Each year is linked to an article about that particular NFL season.
  2. ^ Bobby Petrino resigned after Week 14 of the 2007 NFL season, causing assistant coach Emmitt Thomas to be appointed as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
  3. ^ Jason Garrett, who was the Cowboys assistant head coach, was named as the interim coach of the Dallas Cowboys on November 9, 2010 after head coach Wade Phillips was fired mid-season after a 45–7 loss to the Green Bay Packers making the Cowboys 1–7 on the season.[19] Jason Garrett was hired as the full-time head coach following the season. [20]
  4. ^ Josh McDaniels was fired after week 13 of 2010 and RB coach Eric Studesville was named as the interim head coach. [22]
  5. ^ Leslie Frazier, who was the Vikings Defensive Coordinator, was named as the interim head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on November 22, 2010 after head coach Brad Childress was fired mid-season after a 31–3 loss to the Green Bay Packers making the Vikings 3–7 on the season.[30] Leslie Frazier was hired as the full-time head coach following the season. [31]
  6. ^ Sean Payton was suspended on March 21, 2012 for the 2012 season (from April 1 through Super Bowl XLVII) for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Joe Vitt took over as interim head coach through training camp and preseason. At the beginning of the season he served a suspension of 6 games for his role in the scandal, and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer became interim head coach. [33] Vitt once again took over in week 7 following his suspension.
  7. ^ Mike Singletary was originally hired as the interim coach for the 2008 NFL season, after head coach Mike Nolan was fired mid-season.[41] After the 2008 season ended, San Francisco hired Singletary as their full-time head coach.[42] Singletary was fired on December 26, 2010, following a 25–17 loss to the St. Louis Rams and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula served as interim head coach for the rest of the season.[43]
