There are 32 head coaching positions in the National Football League (NFL). Following the 2012 NFL regular season, 8 head coaches were fired. These include Andy Reid from the Philadelphia Eagles,[1] Pat Shurmur from the Cleveland Browns,[2] Norv Turner from the San Diego Chargers,[3] Romeo Crennel from the Kansas City Chiefs,[4] Lovie Smith from the Chicago Bears,[5] Ken Whisenhunt form the Arizona Cardinals,[6] Chan Gailey from the Buffalo Bills,[7] and Mike Mularkey from the Jacksonville Jaguars.[8] The Chiefs later hired Reid to replace Crennel,[9] making him the only one of the eight to be rehired as a head coach.
The longest tenured head coach on his current team is Bill Belichick, who has been with the New England Patriots since the 2000 NFL season. Belichick also has the most wins among active coaches, as well as most Super Bowl appearances (5) and Super Bowl wins (3) as head coach.[10] Others to have won a Super Bowl as head coach with their current team include Mike Tomlin, Tom Coughlin, John Harbaugh and Mike McCarthy. Additionally Sean Payton, who is suspended for the 2012 season and is expected to return to the New Orleans Saints, has won a Super Bowl, and Mike Shanahan has won two with a team other than his current.
