The International Commission for Optics (ICO) was created in 1947 with the objective to contribute to the progress and dissemination of knowledge in optics.

It is a Scientific Associate of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and Affiliated Commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

Among the activities of ICO are the organization and sponsorship of congresses, meetings and schools. It is having a Traveling Lecturer Program, a periodical newsletter, series of book publishing, and awards — in optics and related disciplines.
