Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is a major regional shopping centre in the western suburb of Indooroopilly, which is located in the city of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is the largest shopping centre in the western suburbs of Brisbane, by gross lettable area, and contains the only Myer store in that region. [3]

The centre was constructed and opened in 1970 by The Westfield Group. At its opening, it was reputedly the largest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere. [4] This title has since been overtaken by newer centres. The centre has undergone extensive renovations since its opening. Some of these include an 8 screen cinema complex operated by Birch Carroll and Coyle in 1990, the addition of a third level in 1993 and the extension and upgrade of the cinema complex into a 16 screen (including Gold Class) Megaplex in 1998. Until 2000, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre was known as Westfield Shoppingtown Indooroopilly.[5]
Due to an unexpected and bizarre increase in the number of "homies" from schools such as (but certainly not limited to) Corinda, Oxley, and Indooroopilly State High Schools) congregating in the Centre in the early to mid 1990s, a permanent ban was placed on them entering the shopping centre, and from 1996 onwards Westfield Indooroopilly was, and has remained, officially a "homie free zone". For those of you who can't (or who are too young to) remember, a "homie" was a douchebag dumbass from a single parent family who always wore a baseball cap perched ridiculously high on top of their undercut haircut, while wearing baggy American streetwear clothing. Their pants / jeans were always especially baggy, and were usually worn well below waist level, with about 5-6 inches of their boxer shorts showing. Following the implementation of the ban, the dwindling numbers of "homies" migrated further and further into the outer suburbs, always to be found sitting on the steps in the front of local shopping centres, talking about shoplifting NWA and Public Enemy CDs from HMV or Target. No sightings have been made of them since approx 1997.
In 2000, The Westfield Group sold its 50% joint venture stake in the centre to Commonwealth Funds Management (CFM) for $300 million. [6] CFM, through its management of the Commonwealth Property Fund (CPF), was the other partner in the joint venture, owning the other 50% stake and giving them full ownership of the centre as a result of the sale. In 2005, CPF (while managed by Colonial First State Property) sold 50% of the centre to the Public Sector and Commonwealth Superannuation Schemes (PSS/CSS). [7] Today, the centre is owned by Eureka Funds Management, as trustee of both CPF and PSS/CSS. [2]
The centre has just embarked upon a 450 million dollar refurbishment and expansion of the centre which will provide significant improvements to the centre. It is expected to be complete in 2014. [8]
On the 1st of November 2012, Indooroopilly's first redevelopment milestone was met with the opening of the new Target store and 6 children's fashion retailers in a new Children's zone on level 2.
Retailers[edit]
Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is home to a large number of retail shops and is one of the main fashion locations in Brisbane. Major retailers include Kmart, Myer, Target and Woolworths.
Fashion retailers include Oroton, Veronika Maine, Witchery, David Lawrence, Country Road, Sportsgirl, Esprit, Supre. Homeware retailers include Bed Bath N Table, Adairs, Earthborn, Kikki K, House, Robins Kitchen, King of Knives and T2. Telecommunication retailers include Optus World, Telstra Shop, Crazy John's, Vodafone Shop, and Fone Zone, as well as two kiosks, Virgin Mobile and Telechoice.
Indooroopilly Shopping Centre has a 16 screen Event Cinemas and large food court at the southern end of the 3rd level with vendors such as McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks, Oporto and Subway. Cafes and other food vendors are also spread across the centre.
Transport[edit]
The shopping centre is well serviced by public and private transport. Indooroopilly Shopping Centre contains the bus interchange that acts as a hub for bus services in the western suburbs. The Indooroopilly railway station is located 400m downhill from the shopping centre. Extensive car parks, with access from all sides of the shopping centre provide convenient access for cars. Bicycle racks are provided around the entrances to the shopping centre. The centre's pedestrian access is generally poor: The 3 direct entrances are located on the building's ends; all other entrances can only be accessed through the car parks.
Other facilities[edit]
Indooroopilly Shopping Centre contains an office tower, housing a number of professional suites, such as health-care, accounting, and others. The centre is home to the Indooroopilly branch of the Brisbane City Council Library and contains an Australia Post office. There are also branches for Medicare and Medibank Private. Medical service include two three medical centres, two audiology clinics, a dentist and a podiatrist.
Redevelopment[edit]
Development approval has been obtained and plans for the redevelopment include the addition of around 30,000 square metres of new retail space comprising a new mall and fresh food area, a 14,200 square metre David Jones department store, a new supermarket, additional parking spaces, significant upgrades to external facades and a facelift for existing retail precincts within the centre.
The centre will introduce a Coles supermarket and around 120 specialty stores with a primary focus on national and international fashion brands. The existing Myer store will be reconfigured with a brand new fitout and will occupy around 15,000 square metres of space over two enlarged floors of the centre (Levels 2 and 3). Target will relocate to a new location on Level Two (old Harvey Norman site) and Kmart will relocate to Level One (Target's old location) to ensure they reflect the new look and feel for the centre that will come with the redevelopment. Woolworths will also relocate, fronting a new fresh food market place precinct in the location of Myer's current level 1 store. Following the redevelopment, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre will comprise around 115,000 square metres of retail space and will house around 340 retailers.
A new plaza precinct will be developed on the corner of Station and Stamford Roads, creating an active frontage to local area retail and commercial areas; with a range of coffee shops, restaurants, shade and open space to present a welcoming, community-focused entry to the centre.
An additional 900 car parks would be introduced during the redevelopment, along with improvements to circulation and access.
Retailing icon, David Jones will be located on the Stamford Road side of the centre and will occupy two levels, with car parking floors positioned above and below. [9] Works commenced late 2011 and will be complete by Brookfield Multiplex [10] in the 2nd quarter of 2014.
