Hopatcong High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school serving students in ninth through twelfth grades from Hopatcong, in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Hopatcong Public Schools.

As of the 2010-11 school year, the school had an enrollment of 715 students and 43.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 16.44:1. There were 105 students (14.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 56 (7.8% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[1]

The school was the 289th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 328 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2012 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", after being ranked 200th in 2010 out of 322 schools listed.[2] The magazine ranked the school 174th in 2008 out of 316 schools.[3] The school was ranked 158th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state.[4]

Extracurricular activities[edit]

The Hopatcong High School Chiefs now compete in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, following a reorganization of sports leagues in Northern New Jersey by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.[5] Prior to the 2010 realignment, the school participated in the Sussex County Interscholastic League until the SCIL was dissolved in 2009. The school was categorized by the NJSIAA as North I, Group II.

During 2004 the varsity cross-country team became the North I, Group II state champions. In 2005 the Boys Cross Country team placed 15th in the state at the New Jersey Meet of Champions.[6] The same year the team successfully defended their state sectional title and placed second in Group II

Their track team has had three consecutive undefeated seasons, from 2010 to 2012.[7]

In 2001 and 2005 the varsity football team were the North I, Group II state champions. In 2005, the team beat Sparta High School 20-14 in overtime.[8]

Apart from the aforementioned sports teams, Hopatcong High School maintains a variety of men's and women's sports teams including: Soccer, Cheerleading, Marching Band and Color Guard, Wrestling, Basketball, Bowling, Golf, Track and Field, Softball, Baseball and Tennis.

The school also has a drama club and pit band.

According to the New Jersey Herald, the graduation rate for Hopatcong High School is 86.8%. This rate exceeds the national high school graduation rate of approximately 70%.
