Hard x Mouth Taped Shut
Trent Reznor may have won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for co-writing the score to The Social Network, but he has not "gone Hollywood" yet. In fact, to celebrate his latest film composition project, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Reznor wanted to do something unusual. So Reznor, with the blessing of Dragon Tattoo director David Fincher, sought out Gary Richards, the mastermind behind the HARD electronic music festivals, to put an event together. "I’ve always respected what [Richards] does with HARD, and I thought that was exactly what we needed," Reznor says.[3]

Perhaps no more secure a place to be on Earth than the LA State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles that gathered two dozen acts over the course of 12 hours. Once cleared, party-goers entered and finally got an opportunity to actually see the greenery, the stages and the food trucks. Two stages lined back-to-back pumped out beats while party-goers danced, lounged on one of the many small hills that offered unfettered views of the main stage. This was a dance party.[9]
Nearly 10,000 people passed through the festival gates in the park beneath Chinatown. The main stage was pointing northeast, which meant that the crowd on the hill had no choice but to look towards Los Angeles, the lights of the city skyline fading into the lights. The message was clear: This was a Los Angeles festival. Coachella for the hipsters... and for the dancing-inclined, we have the Hard Summer Music Festival.[10]

Hard LA / M.I.A. which was to be held on July 17, 2010 was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. There has been much speculation as to the reason for the cancellation of Hard LA / M.I.A. Having not gone into specifics about the cancellation, instead the producer stated "it would be better to roll as many acts from that date into one massive party [on August 7, 2010]." [11]
Committed to the music, Hard rebounded with Hard Presents: Die Antwoord, Borgore and Destructo at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles on July 17, 2010. The sold-out show marked the South African group's Los Angeles debut performance.[12]
