HP Labs (or HP Laboratories) is the exploratory and advanced research group for Hewlett-Packard. The lab has some 600 researchers in seven locations throughout the world.[1]

HP Labs was established in 1966 by HP founders Bill Hewlett and David Packard to create an organization focused on the future and not bound by day-to-day business concerns. In 2006, the lab celebrated its 40th anniversary.[1]

Lab locations [edit]

HP Labs Bristol

HP has laboratories around the globe in seven major locations:[3]

In addition to the seven major sites, other HP Labs offices can be found in Princeton, New Jersey, and Barcelona, Spain.

Partners [edit]

HP Labs has a number of public sector and academic partners, including:[1]

  • CERN, Europe's premier particle physics lab
  • CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society
  • Gelato Federation, the global research community for Linux on the Itanium platform
  • PlanetLab Consortium, an open platform for planetary-scale services, and governments around the world.

Labs [edit]

The research group is organized into 23 labs. Research areas include social computing, nanotechnology, nanophotonics, sustainable IT, digital printing and imaging, next-generation multimedia and collaboration, business optimization, cloud computing, exascale computing and information management. Despite extensive past involvement with the Semantic Web, in October 2009 Labs announced that, "HPLabs management have decided not to continue with an active programme of Semantic Web research at HPL."[4]
