Golabganj (Bengali: গোলাপগঞ্জ), or Golabganj, is an Upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh.[1]

History[edit]

Golapganj came into existence on 20 October 1906 as thana. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the Upazila name. It is learnt that in past during the region of Emperor Islam Shah one Mr. Golap Roy was appointed the Dewan (Revenue collector) of Sylhet area. He became prominent by virtue of his social work and pity. He set up a trading centre meaning ganj on the bank of the river Surma that was named Golabganj after his name. The Upaila might have derived its name from this area name where its headquarters is located.
