# Season: Episode: Title: Description: Date:
5 1 "Badge of Deceit" For more than a decade, women in a small Louisiana city live in fear of a rapist who becomes so experienced he leaves no clues to his identity. But computer technology and behavioural science combine to give police a new forensic tool: geographical profiling. Police narrow their search to one man, but to prove he's the perpetrator they turn to an unlikely piece of evidence, a discarded cigarette butt. September 12, 2000
5 2 "Dew Process" When the wife of a well-known dentist is found dead, police are unsure who killed her and injured her husband. Some fibres and a study of the weather patterns on the night of the murder break the case open and reveal the killer. September 19, 2000
5 3 "A Woman Scorned" When a young mother and her infant son are found dead in a corn field, the obvious suspect is the husband and father of the victims. But some insects found on the bodies reveal a vital clue, as does a long blonde hair found on the victims. The blonde hair has something uniquely in common with the brunette hair of the husband's former love interest. The link uncovers a twisted story of passion gone wrong. September 26, 2000
5 4 "A Voice from Beyond" When a decomposed body is found stuffed in a barrel, it's easy to presume murder. But the body had been placed in the barrel 30 years earlier. One of the few clues was an address book found along with the body, but years of moisture had washed away the ink, which was completely gone. Scientists desperately searched for a way to reveal the information written on the pages of the address book. October 3, 2000
5 5 "Burning Ambition" When a Seattle policeman's house goes up in flames, fire experts suspect arson - possibly committed by someone with a vendetta against the officer. One month later, in an ironic twist, the officer whose home was torched, arrests a low-level drug dealer, who confesses to the arson! But when the suspect vanishes, investigators start to question the authenticity of the so-called confession. October 10, 2000
5 6 "Memories" A pregnant woman is brutally attacked in her own home - and her unborn child is killed. After coming out of her coma, and regaining her memory, she identifies her husband as the perpetrator. The semen left at the scene matches her husband's blood type. The husband was convicted and spent 16 years in jail proclaiming his innocence. Then, a new DNA test and an innovative computer programme lead investigators to question just how accurate the wife's recovered memory really was. October 17, 2000
5 7 "Trail of Truth" A mother and her two young daughters are found brutally murdered and sexually violated. The crime scene has no shortage of evidence, but investigators cannot find a conclusive link to their prime suspect. To solve the puzzle, an FBI analyst designs a unique experiment, in which pubic hairs found at the scene are used to establish not only that the perpetrator was in the home, but that he was there when the crime was committed. October 24, 2000
5 8 "Material Evidence" A young girl is found dead, the victim of an apparent sex killer. There are few clues to the killer's identity, but authorities are intrigued by unusual orange fibres embedded in clothing found near the victim. Months go by and the case goes cold, until a van turns up with what appear to be the same orange fibres. Only the latest in forensic technology can determine if there is a connection between the van and the victim. October 31, 2000
5 9 "Killigraphy" A man considered unstable by his neighbours is accused of killing his wife. Marks on the body clearly indicate his guilt. But then a medical detective takes a fresh look at the case. To him, the marks on the body tell a different story, one that has very little to do with murder. November 7, 2000
5 10 "Nursery Crimes" Why do children at a Texas hospital seem to be dying at a higher rate than at any other hospital in the country? Medical investigators have no answers until they discover that one nurse seems to be on-duty in almost all the fatal cases. But proving the connection seems impossible until an international team of doctors uncovers an unlikely murder weapon. November 14, 2000
5 11 "Lasting Impression" When the decomposed body of a young girl is discovered, police have no clues to her identity. But days earlier, a stabbing victim told them she thought she might have witnessed a murder. Police think the cases might be related, and to prove it, turn to bug larvae found on the body and a surprise piece of evidence: a tiny wad of chewing gum found near the victim's body. November 21, 2000
5 12 "Foundation of Lies" When the wife of a noted doctor goes missing, authorities believe it may have to do with an allegedly shady adoption ring. But then her husband goes house-shopping with another woman claiming to be his wife, and a friend finds a strange pile of concrete in his backyard. Investigators use the concrete and the hazy recollections of a young child in an attempt to find the missing woman. November 28, 2000
5 13 "Deadly Knowledge" When a well-respected young woman goes missing, her boyfriend and family fear she has been murdered. A police investigation reveals details about her past that no one, not even her closest friends, suspected: She was a student by day and a $100-an-hour call-girl by night. Her many clients were all suspects in her disappearance, as was her boyfriend. But when her body is discovered, police obtain evidence that reveals her killer and more details about a bizarre double life and its tragic consequences. December 5, 2000
5 14 "Broken Promises" When a popular gym teacher is found dead of what appears to be an accidental gunshot wound, his family is suspicious. They think his wife may have planned his murder. When police find that her previous husband died in questionable circumstances, they re-examine the crime scene and find evidence that the death was no accident. But it is a tape recorded by the victim just before his death that tells the true story of his strange marriage and his wife's insatiable greed. December 12, 2000
5 15 "Time Will Tell" In this international case of extortion, murder, and stolen identities, a Canadian financier assumes the name of a co-worker as part of a money-laundering scheme. The man later turns up dead in an ocean, with an anchor tied around his torso. The only clues to his real identity are a Rolex watch and a maple leaf tattoo. Neither item is as helpful to cracking the case, as the 10 lb. anchor he was tied to. December 19, 2000
5 16 "Second Shot at Love" When a respected heart surgeon is found dead in the basement of his upscale Cincinnati home, police assume he committed suicide. Friends and family indicate that the man suffered prolonged bouts of depression and had spoken of killing himself. But a further investigation reveals that his new wife has a history of violence and an insatiable desire for money. The story of how he died is finally decided in court, as teams of forensic scientists face-off to see if the good doctor died at his own hand or was killed by his gold-digging wife. December 26, 2000
5 17 "Journey to Justice" What does a prosecutor do when he has evidence linking a habitual drunk driver to a hit-and-run in which a child is killed, and he needs to make the crash clear to jurors? In this case, he combines the talents of an accident reconstruction expert with a video specialist to create graphic demonstration of the moment of impact. This was the first case in which video in the courtroom withstood an appeal, and helped make video testimony viable in other cases. January 2, 2001
5 18 "Video Diary" When a gas station/convenience store employee is found shot at point blank range, investigators find the entire murder has been caught on the store's videotape security camera. But the image of the killer is so degraded it seems impossible to positively identify him, until old fashioned forensic science and space age technology come together to reveal the identity of the killer. January 9, 2001
