City of federal importance[1][2] (Russian: Город федерального значения) or federal city in Russia is a city which has a status of both an inhabited locality and a constituent federal subject.

Russia is divided into eighty-five federal subjects, three of which are federal cities.

2014 developments[edit]

On March 18, 2014, the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol were annexed by the Russian Federation.[5] Sevastopol was designated a city of federal significance.[5] Much of the international community and the Ukrainian government do not recognize such status change and consider Sevastopol an integral part of Ukraine.[6]
