ESCP was ranked 10th amongst European Business Schools in 2012 by Financial Times.[2] In 2010, its Master in Management program was ranked 1st worldwide by the Financial Times.,[3] while in 2012 it was ranked 2nd.[4] It also stands 15th in the world ranking for its Executive MBA, as well as 3rd for international experience [5] and in the 2009 QS Global 200 Business Schools Report[6] the school was ranked 10th in Europe. In France, ESCP Europe is usually ranked 3rd, or sometimes 2nd.[7]

Its programmes are triple-accredited by the international AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB. The school has many notable alumni in business and politics, such as Patrick Thomas (CEO Hermès), a former Prime Minister of France, Jean-Pierre Raffarin and the EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier. After graduation, most former students are offered positions of responsibility or graduate training in major companies in the field of marketing, finance and consulting, with expected salaries being amongst the highest of all management schools.

History [edit]

Established on 1 December in 1819, ESCP Europe was founded by a group of economic scholars and businessmen including the economist Jean-Baptiste Say and the trader Vital Roux. ESCP Europe is the oldest business school in the world.[8][9] and thus presents itself as "The World's First Business School (est. 1819)". It was modeled on the École Polytechnique founded by Lazare Carnot and Gaspard Monge, but was much more modest in its beginnings, mainly because it had not been supported by the state. It gradually gained in stature and importance during the 19th century and moved to its current Parisian location, avenue de la République, in 1859. The 20th century sparked a much stronger interest in business studies, and soon enough ESCP Europe saw its importance rise amongst the rest of Grandes Écoles. Its popularity meant it had to develop a rigorous selection process so by the mid-20th century -the school already being considered an elite institution- admitted its students after two years of dedicated preparatory classes through a competitive entrance exam.

ESCP Europe has been international displaying its Global Perspective since its start: The class of 1824 with a total of 118 students counted around 30% foreigners with 7 Spanish, 2 Havanians, 5 Brazilians, 5 Dutch, 4 Germans, 2 Greeks, 2 Portuguese, 2 Americans, 2 Chilians, 1 Savoyard, 1 Italian, 1 Swede, 1 Russian and 1 Haïtian. Language education was an essential part of its first curriculum which included, in addition to French grammar, also courses in English, German, and Spanish.[10] In 1873, the ESCP Europe's alumni association was founded. In 1921, ESCP Europe celebrated its 100th anniversary, postponed due to the post-war crisis, in the vast auditorium of the Sorbonne.

On 5 April 1973, the concept of ESCP Europe as a multi-campus business school is born. Inaugurations of campuses in the United Kingdom (Oxford, now London) and Germany (Düsseldorf, now Berlin) soon follow. This landmarks the School's deep European Identity. In 1988 a campus in Madrid, Spain followed and in 2004 one in Turin, Italy. The Düsseldorf campus moved to Berlin in 1984. In 2005 ESCP Europe moved from Oxford to London. The London Campus building was formerly New College – a school of the University of London and a theological college of the United Reformed Church.

In 2011, ESCP Europe became a founding partner of HESAM, a cluster of well known institutions for research and higher education in the humanities and social sciences such as the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA), the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (CNAM), or the Pantheon-Sorbonne University. It is planned that together with the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, ESCP Europe constitutes a Collegium of Government and Management.[11]

Master in Management [edit]

The Master in Management is a pre-experience program enrolling strictly selected students. In that it exemplifies the two century long standing of this French originated, now European "Grande Ecole". Over 800 students study in this 2-year general management program. An additional pre-Master year (in preparation of the Master programme) is offered to students not holding a bachelor's degree but having previously completed at least two years of university education. The pre-Master year is mainly designed for the French students coming from the French classes préparatoires but also many Italian students join the pre-Master year on the Torino campus. In total, the program brings together around 70 nationalities. Students can study in Paris, London Berlin, Madrid, or Turin. Within the general management programme, they have the possibility to choose from over 20 specialisation tracks and more than 150 electives. They can be eligible to receive the additional degrees:

ESCP Europe has dual degree programs with premier institutes around the world to promote understanding of international business. Students from the double degree program receive the Master in Management degree as well as the degree from their home schools.

The ESCP Europe Master's in Management was ranked second best in the world in 2008 [7]. In 2010 it was ranked number 1 and in 2011 its average ranking for the past three years was 2nd in the world under the Financial Times survey.

Master in European Business [edit]

Designed like an MBA with a cross-cultural approach, the MEB is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme (90 ECTS; possibility to do a longer 120 ECTS version) in general management with emphasis on a pragmatic approach to management. The programme is designed for graduates who have an undergraduate honours degree in any non-business discipline (i.e. law, engineering, sciences, humanities, medicine). Post-graduate professional experience of around two years is recommended. All students are selected by means of their academic and professional credentials and the successful completion of an assessment center including various interviews and a verbal-logic test (GMAT or SHL Test). There is a strong international side to the course and in 2008/09, there were 39 different nationalities across the five campuses.

The MEB is taught over two semesters, with students based in a different country for each semester (chosen from Paris, London, Madrid, Berlin and Turin). There are also international agreements with partner institutions where students can spend a semester and receive a double degree awarded by these institutions:

The MEB has AMBA (Association of MBAs) accreditation in the category of Masters in Business and Management (MBM).[12]

Executive MBA [edit]

The Executive MBA is not a European tradition, and has long been considered a lesser degree than pre-experience Master's degrees.[13] This is changing rapidly however, with the internationalisation of study programs and competition among the world's best business schools.

ESCP Europe's Executive MBA ranks 15th (by October 2010) in the world and 9th in Europe in the current Financial Times ranking [8].

The Financial Times also qualify the Executive MBA with other criteria such as:

  • 1st worldwide for career progression;
  • 3rd worldwide for international course content;
  • 5th worldwide for international student body;

Specialized Masters [edit]

Full-time Specialized Masters

There are 18 Specialized Masters on offer at ESCP Europe, open to students holding a Bachelor degree or a first Master degree's and subject to a selective competitive entrance exam.

Executive Specialized Masters

There are 8 Executive Specialized Masters on offer at ESCP Europe.

Executive Education [edit]

ESCP Europe also offers several intensive modules for executives (open enrollment programmes) and highly customised programmes adapted to the needs of specific companies and organisations. Open programmes invite participants from different companies to learn together in intensive modules ranging from a couple of days to a couple of weeks and covering a wide range of business topics such as Business 2.0 or Supply Chain Management. Customised programmes are exclusively designed according to the needs and preferences of a specific company.

Ph.D. Programme [edit]

The purpose of the ESCP Europe Ph.D. programme, taking place in Paris or Berlin, is to train research-active professors and high-level consultants in the field of "Management Science." Based on a "European degree course", jointly organized with several academic partners, the ESCP Europe PhD program enables participants to develop knowledge through research and to take positions in the academic community anywhere. Program participants are potential faculty recruits for graduate schools of management (Grandes Ecoles) in France, universities or international companies. The ESCP Europe PhD program is highly selective and admits only a limited number of participants. Certain degree candidates may obtain the status of Research Assistant and receive financing for the duration of their thesis.

Campus [edit]

While the management of the school is unique, ESCP Europe has several campuses. Students have the opportunity to study in different campuses located in France[14] (Paris), in the UK (London), Spain (Madrid), Germany (Berlin), Italy (Turin). ESCP Europe’s network of around 100 partner universities worldwide extends the School’s reach from European to worldwide.

Alumni [edit]

ESCP Europe's 40,000 alumni representing around 200 nationalities in 150 countries form a strong network, following the long-lasting tradition of the Grandes Écoles "esprit de corps". 1200 graduates join the alumni network each year.

Associations [edit]

There are over 50 different student associations across ESCP Europe's 5 campuses. Some examples are:

TEDxESCP

TEDxESCP Logo

ESCP Europe is the first business school in France to organize a TEDx event. TEDxESCP is a student association that has been set up in the spirit of TED with the mission of “Ideas worth spreading”. The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. The events are going to be held both in English and French and the first of them is taking place on 25 February 2012.

Shuffle ESCP

Shuffle ESCP Logo

Picking up the torch of its predecessor Absolutely, Shuffle ESCP is ESCP Europe’s official on-campus international association since October 2011. The goal of the association is to support the international dimension that ESCP Europe strives to embody. By encouraging interaction between international and French students, and through educational and social activities promoting cross-cultural understanding, exchange and cohesion, Shuffle ESCP helps strengthen the school’s internationality. The association’s activities include international dinners, concerts, a welcome evening for incoming exchange students to ESCP Europe’s Paris campus, cultural activities in Paris and its surroundings, and more. Shuffle ESCP is also the only association at school in which English is the official spoken language, and where international students can find help about any administrative formality by reaching out to our staff.

Star Trekk' ESCP

Star Trekk' ESCP is the eco-friendly association of the School, present in the 5 campuses of ESCP Europe, and dedicated to the organization of different events dealing with trekking, green development and the environment protection. Every year, Star Trekk' ESCP organizes more particularly the School's Raid, a four-day sport competition open to 90 ESCP students and managers. Star Trekk' ESCP is proud of being a leader in the eco-friendly issues among the "Grandes Ecoles" Raids in France. More info on http://www.ecoraid-startrekk.com/ .

Sport association

Sport is one of the most respected student activities in ESCP. The school provides numerous facilities for doing sports even on campus - lots of sports like Yoga, Fitness, Zumba, Pilates, Fencing and lots of others are practiced on the spot, which is convenient for those students who work and study at the same time and don’t have the opportunity to go somewhere far from the campus during the day. Also there is an opportunity to go outside the campus to practice Rowing, Golf, Tennis, Sailing and several other sports. The school generally provides the transport and special fees for the sports that require special equipment and facilities, like horseback riding. Students can practice up to two sports simultaneously through the inscription and also use the school gym according to its working hours. Sport association is not a student association run by students, but it is a powerful entity to provide students with best sport practices available and contribute to students’ active life as much as possible. Sport association also supports partnerships with student sports associations, like ski clubs to create the great outside campus sport events. Now the sport association is headed by Thierry Simon and David Laroque.
