Cardiomegaly is a medical condition wherein the heart is enlarged.It can sometimes be temporary due to the stress on the body in conditions like pregnancy,medical conditions etc. Cardiomegaly is a descriptive term used for the finding of an enlarged heart and it is not a disease itself.

Dilation or hypertrophy[edit]

Cardiac dilation is where mainly one or more heart chambers is enlarged, while cardiac hypertrophy is where mainly cardiac muscle is enlarged.

Clinical Information

  • Abnormal enlargement of the heart.
  • Enlargement of the heart, usually indicated by a cardiothoracic ratio above 0.50. Heart enlargement may involve the right, the left, or both heart ventricles or heart atria. Cardiomegaly is a nonspecific symptom seen in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (heart failure) or several forms of cardiomyopathies.
  • Hypertrophy or enlargement of the heart.
