Bakcell was established in 1994 and became the first company to provide mobile communications services in the country. Bakcell now covers more than 95% of the population and 82% of the land area of the country. The entire network has been upgraded to EDGE technology to provide high speed internet. Today, over 2,000 base stations are in operation. The number of Bakcell active subscribers now exceeds 2.5 million.^{[citation needed]}

Bakcell customers can use roaming service in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and Africa. Bakcell has Voice and SMS and GPRS roaming agreements with 256 operators in 153 countries globally.^{[citation needed]}
