Area code 570 is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania telephone area code. The 570 code serves the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, including the cities of Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Sayre and as far south as Pottsville. 570 was split from area code 717 on December 5, 1998.
As 570 was nearing exhaust, an overlay has been approved. The new area code will be 272.[1] It was anticipated that 272 would have gone into effect as early as March 1, 2011, although due to successful number conservation the new code is scheduled to be activated, alongside the current 570, on September 21, 2013.
