The Rams signed free-agent and oft-injured QB Bert Jones from the Baltimore Colts. Vince Ferragamo returned from the CFL as well, and, with Pat Haden retired, the competition was between these two. Jones opened the season as the starter.

The Falcons offense then asserted itself behind Steve Bartkowski, who passed for 213 yards and a TD, William Andrews, who rushed for 119 yards and a TD, and rookie Gerald Riggs, who rushed for two more. |

Joe Montana passed for 305 yards, while Ferragamo celebrated his return as Rams' starter with 286. |
