The Rams signed free-agent and oft-injured QB Bert Jones from the Baltimore Colts. Vince Ferragamo returned from the CFL as well, and, with Pat Haden retired, the competition was between these two. Jones opened the season as the starter.

Regular season [edit]

Schedule [edit]

Week Date Opponent Result Summary Attendance
1 September 12, 1982 at Green Bay Packers L 35-23 The Rams, with new QB Bert Jones under center, stormed out to a 23-0 halftime lead and looked dominant on the road. However, the loaded Packer offense stormed back with five unanswered TD's, 3 on passes by QB Lynn Dickey and 2 rushing by Eddie Lee Ivery.

2 September 19, 1982 Detroit Lions L 19-14 Lions stormed out to a 16-0 lead and held on for the win. Billy Sims rushed for 119 yards. CFL returnee Vince Ferragamo replaced an ineffective Jones in the 4th and led two late scoring drives, one on an 85-yard bomb to Willie Miller, but it was too little, too late.
59,470
3 November 21, 1982 Atlanta Falcons L 34-17 As both teams celebrated a return to football from the 1982 NFL players strike, Jones was hot early as Rams jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead. The Falcons offense then asserted itself behind Steve Bartkowski, who passed for 213 yards and a TD, William Andrews, who rushed for 119 yards and a TD, and rookie Gerald Riggs, who rushed for two more.
39,686
4 November 28, 1982 Kansas City Chiefs W 20-14 Rams finally got in the win column behind two rushing TD's by Wendell Tyler and a Leroy Irvin punt return TD. Jones, however, suffered a neck injury and would be lost for the season. The injury effectively ended Jones' NFL career.
45,793
5 December 2, 1982 San Francisco 49ers L 30-24 In a Thursday night barnburner, the Rams' Tyler and the 49ers Jeff Moore matched efforts, each scoring 3 TD's. 49ers won late on Moore's 1-yard TD that was set up by a long kickoff return to midfield by Dana McLemore following the Rams' go-ahead TD. Joe Montana passed for 305 yards, while Ferragamo celebrated his return as Rams' starter with 286.
58,574
6 December 12, 1982 Denver Broncos L 27-24 In a disturbing pattern that marked the Rams' season, they got off to an early huge lead. The Rams led 21-0 in the second quarter, all TD's scored after 2 fumbles and an interception. But, Denver's offense righted itself as Steve DeBerg passed for two TD's before halftime, and RB Rick Parros scored the winning TD in the 4th. Rams' defense once again failed to seal the deal.
48,112
7 December 18, 1982 at Los Angeles Raiders L 37-31 FOr the second straight game, the Rams got an early lead and couldn't hold it. They blew a 21-7 halftime lead as rookie Marcus Allen scored 3 TD's, offsetting a 4-INT performance by Jim Plunkett.
56,646
8 December 26, 1982 Chicago Bears L 34-26 The Bears offset a great performance by Ferragamo, who passed for a Ram-record 509 yards and 3 TD's. Walter Payton ran for 104 yards and a TD and rookie QB Jim McMahon passed for two TD's.
46,502
9 January 2, 1983 at San Francisco 49ers W 21-20 The Rams salvaged a rough season with a road win over the 49ers. Ferragamo hit George Farmer with a late TD bomb to win it. After the game, coach Ray Malavasi was fired. Former USC coach John Robinson was named as his replacement.
